The Case for Gold-Plated Over Solid Gold (And When It Isn't)

"Is it real gold?"

It's the first question I'm asked about almost every piece we make. And it's the wrong question.

We grow up being told solid gold is the only real choice. That anything else is a compromise. A stepping stone, until you can afford the thing you actually wanted. I want to push back on that idea — gently — because it's keeping a lot of women from owning jewellery they'd genuinely love and wear.

So here's the honest version. From someone who has designed both.

What gold-plated actually means

Our pieces are made on a base of solid sterling silver or surgical stainless steel. Then coated in a thick layer of either 18-karat or 14-karat gold, depending on the piece. Not the flash plating you might remember from costume jewellery in the 90s — that wore off in a season because the gold layer was measured in microns of vanity, not substance.

Good plating, done properly, holds for years.

The look is identical to solid gold. The weight feels the same in your hand. Most jewellers can't tell the difference without testing.

Where gold-plated wins

For the way most of us actually live, gold-plated is the considered choice.

You can own three or four pieces instead of one. You can layer. You can take risks with shapes and styles you might not commit to at five times the price. And — this is the part that matters most — you can actually wear them.

I see customers who own beautiful solid gold pieces and keep them in a box for "special occasions." Special occasions arrive maybe four times a year. The jewellery sits in the dark for the other three hundred and sixty-one days.

That isn't what jewellery is for. Not to me.

Where solid gold still makes sense

I won't pretend gold-plated is the right answer for everything. There are three situations where solid is genuinely the better choice.

Pieces that never come off. Wedding bands. An engagement ring. A signet you wear in the shower and to the gym and to sleep. Anything that lives on your body twenty-four hours a day will eventually wear through plating. Solid gold is right for these because the metal is the surface.

Heirloom intent. If you're buying something for your daughter to inherit in thirty years, solid gold holds value and lasts indefinitely. Plating, however well done, isn't forever.

Sensitive skin where even sterling causes reactions. Rare. But real, for some.

For everything else — earrings, layered necklaces, statement rings you rotate, bracelets, the pieces that make up the daily texture of how you dress — gold-plated isn't a compromise. It's the format that fits how jewellery actually gets worn.

The honest economics

A solid gold necklace from a heritage brand costs $1,200 to $4,000. The same design from us, gold-plated in sterling, is around $180.

We're not cheaper because we cut corners on craft. The same artisans. The same finishing. The same design hours.

We're cheaper because gold itself is expensive — and we made a deliberate choice. Not to put forty grams of it around your neck, when two microns will look identical and last for years.

The savings aren't a loss. They're permission. To own more. Wear more. Give more.

The way I think about it

Own one solid gold piece that means something to you. The ring you'll wear forever. The locket that came from your grandmother. The thing meant to outlast you.

Build the rest of your collection in gold-plated. Layer freely. Rotate. Replace pieces in five or seven years when your style has moved anyway.

Jewellery should move with your life. Not sit in a box waiting for it.

That's the philosophy we design around. Less expensive doesn't mean less considered. It means more wearable. More often. For more of the women who'd otherwise be priced out of feeling beautifully adorned on their own everyday.
